چکیده

H E experiments to be described below are most simply interpretable in T terms of a new type of genetic recombination between temperate bacteriophages. This takes place between two related prophages during normal growth of a bacterial strain the cells of which carry them both. For the purpose of such a discussion it has been found necessary to refine and extend some terms in common use (JACOB, LWOFF, SIMINOVITCH and WOLLMAN 1953) and to add others.

Genetic Studies of Lysogenicity in Escherichia Coli.

ECENT research on Escherichia coli phages has outlined the biology of R viruses that promptly lyse their bacterial hosts (DELBRUCK 1950). In addition to the progressive parasitic relationship that these studies have analyzed, many phage-bacterium complexes persist in a more enduring symbiosis, lysogenicity. The experiments to be described in this paper were designed to probe two related questio...

The establishment of lysogenicity in Escherichia coli.

When a population of sensitive bacteria is exposed to infection by a temperate phage, a large number of cells are not lysed and give rise to colonies containing lysogenic cells. Some of the factors influencing the probability that an infected cell of Escherichia coli, strain K12S, will give a lysogenic response are reported here. In addition, the present study deals with the change of free phag...

Effects of x-rays on the formation of lactase in a lysogenic strain and a sensitive strain of Escherichia coli.

The process of adaptive enzyme formation has aroused considerable interest through the years. In view of the interesting results of several recent investigations of the effects of radiations on adaptive enzyme formation (Spiegelman et al., 1951; Swenson and Giese, 1950; Brandt et al., 1951; Billen and Lichstein, 1952; Swenson, 1950) it seemed desirable to investigate the effects of x-rays on th...

Interplay between the temperate phages PY54 and N15, linear plasmid prophages with covalently closed ends.

The objective of this study was to determine whether the temperate Yersinia enterocolitica phage PY54 may interact with the related Escherichia coli phage N15 during both the lysogenic and the lytic cycle in the same cell. The PY54 and N15 prophages are linear plasmids which have been shown to be compatible and stably replicating in E. coli and Yersinia. In E. coli, the PY54 prophage does not r...

Prophage induction of Escherichia coli (lambda) by N-nitrosamines.

Carcinogenic N-nitrosamines were tested for their ability to induce lambda in a lysogenic strain of Escherichia coli K-12 (58-161 F+ Dimethylnitrosamine, di-n-propylnitrosamine, methyl-n-propylnitrosamine, and N-nitrosopiperidine were shown to be inducers of prophage.
